The Tailor Project
Observations of an Iconic Species
This project has arisen from observations of Tailor (Pomatomus saltatrix) gathered from hundreds of dives over 5 years which cast new light on how Tailor utilise inshore reef environments. The previously undocumented behaviour and the ability of existing management plans to adequately cater for this, raises concerns over the long term health and sustainability of the fishery in high pressure multi-use environments.

When they ARRIVEEach year adult tailor arrive on the reef in early summer staying until the end of autumn. Where they spend the rest of the year is unknown. |
Why these reefs The structure of the reef provides a wide variety of habitats and is key to understanding why tailor choose the reefs they do. |
Refuge, Rest & RelaxationThrough spending time with the same fish daily over summer Patrick is able to identify individual fish and record them at rest. |
My Goal
To produce meaningful science with minimal harm.
OBSERVATIONALBehavioural study of individual tailor and school recruitment dynamics
It was through the joy of exploration that Patrick first discovered the tailor.
Blackspot
One of the largest tailor on the reef in 2018. |
World FirstLong term observations of tailor injured through recreational fishing
Understanding the importance of these small remaining inshore reefs is critical to conserving breeding and nursery sites.
Some of the characters
Caveman
One of the coolest characters. Most tailor chill - circling slowly with the school. Caveman prowls his lair. |
Ethical researchNon-invasive sampling
Through diligent science and non-invasive observation we can better manage our precious seas for the next generation of smiling snorklers with a love of the water and the wild.
The General Named for the cigar like weed growth on the hook embedded in the corner of its mouth and a pugnacious attitude. |
The General is one of many fish which carry hooks.
The research into fish injured in this fashion is believed to be the first of its kind in the world.
